Happy Pride month! As we step into June, we celebrate the LGBTQ+ community. Allies are powerful for the LGBTQ+ community. Merriam-Webster defines “ally” as “one that is associated with another as a helper; a person or group that provides assistance and support in an ongoing effort, activity or struggle.”

There are many ways to be a good ally. Being an ally means being visible and supportive. Acceptance and taking action are two components that are commonly cited by LGBTQ+ community for effective allyship.

5 Tips to help you be a good Ally

1. Support the people in your life by using the correct pronouns and inclusive language. It’s always okay to ask someone their pronouns if you aren’t sure.
2. Educate yourself about LGBT+ history. Organizations like GLSEN and The Trevor Project have wonderful history sections on their websites.
3. Encourage representation and acceptance by promoting LGBT+ voices. Listen to what advocates have to say. Share and repost their ideas so others are exposed as well.
4. Take a political stance. Vote, call and email representatives, volunteer, and donate to advocacy groups. We have a great list of local and national organizations in our blog.
5. Have fun! Participate in pride events such as parades, drag shows, and fundraisers. Attendance of these events increases the likelihood that they will happen again and carves out a space for local representation.
Most importantly, do these things year-round! Good allies realize the work doesn’t end when pride month is over.
