DBT (Dialectical Behavioral Therapy) is an evidence-based treatment that was developed by psychologist Marsha M. Linehan. DBT can be life changing for anyone who experiences intense emotions. It is based on Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and it is adapted for intense emotions.

The Name

Molly Hunt explains “the dialectical thinking is the ability to hold two seemingly contradictory truths in your mind at once-the ability to see things not as good or bad, but good and bad.

According to Alec Miller, “When we get less polarized in our own heads, we do less extreme thinking and feel less extreme emotions.”

“Dialectical thinking recognizes that two opposing truths can be true at the same time. It’s the opposite of black-and-white thinking or all-or-nothing thinking. I think of it as brain yoga because it makes your brain more flexible.”-Diana Partington, LPC

The Deets

Psychologist Martha Linehan developed DBT in the 1970″s to treat suicidal and self-injuring patients with borderline personality disorder. These patients needed a way to cope with intense emotions that were leading to dangerous behaviors. DBT is similar to cognitive behavioral therapy, however, there is more focus on accepting your emotions VS. changing your emotions. There are elements of Buddhism in DBT with the focus on acceptance, experiencing the world as it is, and the emphasis on decrease suffering and increase control of the mind. One of the big reasons that people seek out DBT is because research shows that it is effective.

How it Helps

  • Helps people to recognize negative thought patterns and change them
  • Reduce cravings that lead to substance abuse
  • Builds mindfulness skills
  • Helps with distress tolerance
  • Emotional regulation skills
  • Skills for interpersonal relationships

The main goals of DBT are to teach people how to better regulate their emotions, be in the moment, cope with stress, and improve their relationships.
