Spread the love

We sat down to interview our newest therapist, Sophia Stevenson and here is what she said below:

What attracted you to becoming a therapist?

I think I’ve always had an innate emotional awareness and desire to empathize and connect with people in pain. I became interested in therapy after starting my own therapeutic journey and recovery. I love learning about people and understanding how their experiences have shaped them.

Where did you train?

I did my LMSW internship at the Covenant House in New Orleans. Once I became licensed, I started doing more clinical work at Imagine Recovery, where I still work some days. I’ve learned a lot from working in different clinical environments.

What type of clients do you usually see?

Many of my clients have co-occurring mental health concerns and substance misuse. I really love working with this population and enjoy being able to use my personal experience in the therapeutic process.

What do you do for your own self-care/mental health?

So many things! I work with my own therapist and attend 12 Step meetings; I spend time with my family, friends and community; I prioritize rest/sleep; I exercise; and I make time to engage in my favorite hobbies like baking and cooking.

Favorite quotes?

My therapist always says, “what we resist, persists!”

“Recovery isn’t about fixing or doing something exactly right or getting rid of your horrible bits. It is a reclamation of everything you lost along the way; a practice of gentleness; a return to wholeness that requires you to embrace every terrible and wonderful thing about yourself; the radical notion that you are already worthy, simply because you exist.”-Holly Whitaker
