Resolutions can be problematic for many reasons, but we understand the rationale behind them. There is something powerful about reflecting and putting our intentions out into the universe. Doing so can help us move forward in a way that is intentional and in a way that supports our growth.
Here are some of the issues with resolutions:
- They can focus on what we don’t like about oursleves
- They can be too big
- They are focused more on achieving a specific goal and less on the process
- They can be narrow
- We can have negative feelings we don’t achieve them
Research shows that 50 percent of people don’t achieve their resolutions.
“Rather than focusing on the final goal, experts advise paying attention to the small steps, the process, in many cases they advise not setting a final goal.” So instead of saying, I want to lose 5 pounds, say I will focus on eating healthier.”
Resolutions don’t have to be difficult; they are actually meant for us to be intentional about health, wellness and good things we want to bring into our lives.
Here are some alternatives to New Years Resolutions that we love:
- Bucket List or dream list- Make a list of things you would like to try in the New Year or experiences you would like to have.
- Create a gratitude journal and commit to writing down the things you are grateful for once a week
- Make a list of the things you are looking forward to

3. Meg Selig the author of Changepower recommends Choosing a “nudge word or a guide word”- this has become a well-known alternative to resolutions. Two years ago, I chose the word cultivate and the was the year that I created this group practice at Modern Therapy and Wellness. The word cultivate kept me focused on what I was striving for. This year I have two guide words: they are experience and grow. If you chose a guide word, what would it be?
4. Have a general goal or affirmation: For instance: I will be more authentic in 2024, I will take good care of myself this year, I will focus on peace this year, I will be more mindful. Write your affirmation somewhere where you can see it.
5. Make a commitment to starting a change process. This could mean committing to therapy or to couples therapy or maybe finding a massage therapist to work on your shoulder pain. You can take this step whenever you are ready in 2024.
6. If you are creative or enjoy creating- create a vision board. This can be a fun process and you can place the board somewhere where you can see it. You could also do this activity with a friend or loved one.
7. Joy Jar- Create a joy jar and write down all of the things that you want to do this year that is joyful

We hope that you enjoy these alternatives. Which one did you like? We would love to hear from you.
